ONE DAY SEMINAR
RELATIONSHIPS WITH FIRE
THE FUTURE OF WOOD-FIRED COOKING
Baking in the Keramis Girel 3E oven, June 2023 © Keramis
SATURDAY 23 MARCH 2024
Through theoretical presentations and talks by ceramists on their relationship with fire, Keramis aims to raise the question of the future of wood-firing: Why fire with wood? How do artists relate to fire in their work? What social issues lie behind a wood-fired oven? How can we reconcile responsible management of natural resources and ceramic firing? Through a range of visions, experiences and achievements, woodfiring will be showcased as a committed tool that complements creation.
This theme originated in June 2023, when Keramis built the first GIREL 3E kiln in Belgium. The concerns underlined by Jean Girel's 3Es (Economic, Ergonomic and Ecological) reveal the current challenges of wood-fired cooking. This high-performance kiln aims to control the firing process and its atmosphere, whether oxidising or reducing, as closely as possible to the theoretical curve, while reducing its ecological footprint. A research tool, it is also used by Keramis as a resource for ceramists and artists in residence, as well as an educational and teaching tool on the transformation of matter by fire.
