Daniel Pontoreau. Before the landscape

From 11 February to 20 August 2023, Keramis presents Daniel Pontoreau. Avant le paysage, a major exhibition dedicated to the French sculptor and ceramist.

Born in Paris in 1947, Daniel Pontoreau was one of the leading exponents of the 'new ceramics' movement in France in the 1970s and 80s.

The artist's highly technical creations are often of impressive dimensions and interact with architecture and the environment.

A minimalist and a materialist, Daniel Pontoreau explores a metaphysical vein in which form enters into a dialogue with both matter and the cosmos. In addition to ceramics, the artist uses other raw materials such as glass, cast iron and marble, each of which has its own value.

After numerous exhibitions in France, South Korea, China and Japan, this is the first time that Daniel Pontoreau has presented such a large group of sculptures.

Although the Keramis exhibition is not a retrospective, older works are presented alongside more recent ones.

Daniel Pontoreau. Avant le paysage was put together in close collaboration with the artist. The choice of each sculpture was based on its ability to interact with the singularity of the museum's architecture: its interior and exterior spaces, its curves and angles, the colour of its concrete, the reds of its bricks and the omnipresence of light.
