To create this piece, Christian Gonzenbach (born in 1975) moulded a motorcycle engine to produce a ceramic cast covered with a bright red-orange glaze imitating incandescent metal. The title Domestication du feu (Domestication of Fire) refers to Prehistory and the first experiences of controlling and using an essential energy to warm oneself, light up, or cook food—the starting point of a technical history marked by the conquest, mastery, and progressive exploitation of natural resources, at the far end of which would be the combustion engine, emblem of the 20th century and dependence on fossil fuels. Cleverly, Christian Gonzenbach uses ceramics (born from a passage through fire) to represent a tool that contains fire, provokes it, and channels its energy.
