The combustion of a vegetable resin, copal, plays an important role in Maya rituals. This ceramic censer, of truncated cone shape, represents on its front face a character with half-closed eyes encircled by a double ring and a wide mouth ending in volutes from which four fangs emerge. It is probably Tlaloc, one of the most important deities of ancient Mexico, associated with rain and the fertility of the earth. This type of ceramic production with a high symbolic charge was associated with ceremonial or funerary contexts. The smoke escaped from the prominent mouth of the censer to rise towards the sky, making the link with the deities.
