Arlette Simon (born in 1950) has built a body of work centred on the exploration of perceptible movements in nature, the volumes that take shape there, its games of balance, void, and fullness. Serpentine is a green glazed ceramic sculpture composed of curved tubes knotted to one another, and surmounted by a flexible, dancing bright red neon light, attached at several points by black plastic cable ties. Between the joyful and luminous curve of the streamer and the tortuous symbolic silhouette of a worrying reptile, the "Serpentine" series refers to a hybrid universe, between nature and culture, where earth-matter rubs shoulders with this artificial light emblematic of the commercial and medical activities of our contemporary societies.
