Invited to participate in the commissioning programme of Les Aliénés du Mobilier national, launched in 2021, which invites creators to reinterpret old, decommissioned, or "alienated" furniture from its collections, the artist Simone Pheulpin (born in 1941) takes over the caned seat of two bentwood chairs—emblematic creations of the Thonet company—and uses them as "guides and supports for her sculptures". To design the sculptural shape of this meteorite, letting herself be guided by the material, she folds and refolds the fabric, stiffening it until it gives it the appearance and density of stone. Echoes of the geological world, reflections of a mineral and vegetal world like the fossils of a cabinet of curiosities, the fractures born from the twisting of the textile seem to reveal telluric forces.
