In Sliced Cloud, five glazed stoneware blocks in the colours of water and earth form a whole—somewhere between an architectural column, a tree trunk studded with shells, and a cluster of clouds—pierced and unified by the warm light of a lightning bolt. Earth, water, air, and fire are symbolised in this work, which summons the imagery of the four elements. The neon contained in a plexiglass case evokes an energetic radiation capable of separating and gathering each segment, reenacting the Big Bang, the creation of the universe and of matter. Marion Verboom, a visual artist and ceramicist, described as a builder because of the architectural aspect of her works, makes sensible and visible in the same gesture the primordial energy emanating from the earth, and the power required to work it and inhabit it.
