Decorated with glazes, adorned with multicoloured straws and plastics, and sometimes even with sketched faces, Sylvie Auvray's ceramic brooms stand as sculptures holding themselves up in a corner, or hanging on the wall, hooked by a nail. It is the practical and universal dimension of the broom, this common, banal, everyday object recognisable by all, which is the starting point for the artist's inspiration. The capacity of this object to transcend the everyday to be sometimes associated with witches or ritual purification practices in temples in Japan fascinates the artist, who explores with these brooms the border between the banal and the extraordinary, between art and life.
