Benoît Pouplard uses different textures of slip and glaze, applied in successive layers, whose characteristics, revealed upon firing, cause cracking, sliding, and fragmentation, to recreate the movements and transformations of the ice floe. Porcelain and celadon evoke the cold, bluish colours of the Far North. The title Ultima Thule is a tribute to the Greek navigator Pytheas who, in the 4th century BC, gave an account of his discovery of present-day Greenland during his journey to the limits of the known world. Benoît Pouplard invites us on this journey towards what he calls "Celadonia". Through his creations, he shares with us his fascination for chaos and his sensitivity towards climate change.
