Trigrams are combinations of three horizontal lines, either continuous or broken in their middle, symbolising heaven, earth, thunder, mountains, fire, clouds, waters, and wind. They are reproduced alternately with eight other Taoist emblems, each associated with an immortal. This correspondence reveals the five movements (metal, earth, wood, water, and fire), the fundamental basis of traditional Chinese medicine. In the centre, on a scroll unrolled by two priests, is the symbol of yin, the feminine principle associated with the moon, darkness, but also the earth, and yang, the masculine principle associated with the sun, light, and heavenly paradise. This decoration recalls the fundamental principles of Chinese philosophy and cosmogony based on the concept of balance between the forces of nature.
