BAI MING. VIBRATIONS OF THE EARTH
From 16 November 2019 to 15 March 2020, Keramis is staging the first exhibition in Belgium dedicated to Bai Ming, an internationally renowned contemporary artist from China.
Bai Ming was born in 1965 in Yugan, about one hundred kilometres from the former imperial porcelain factories in Jingdezhen. Bai Ming means “white light” in Chinese, which is a promising name for a porcelain artist and reflects exactly what has emerged in the artist’s ceramic and pictorial work.
A restorer of 1990s Chinese ceramics, Bai Ming transforms both the form and the material: utilitarian objects become sculptures, with evocative motifs added in sparkling colours.
After more than 20 solo exhibitions, including in China, France, South Korea, the United States and Portugal, Bai Ming is presenting his ceramic and pictorial creations in Belgium for the very first time at Keramis. This is the artist’s largest retrospective in the west. In all, close to 200 works will be presented to the public, including two major installations, one featuring 40 pieces, the other 80.
The exhibition is being curated by Christine Shimizu, an honorary general heritage curator and specialist in ancient and contemporary Asian ceramics. Notable previous appointments include her role as director of the Cernuschi Museum of Asian art in Paris, which she held until 2015.
Bai Ming. Vibrations of the Earth is being held at Keramis from 16 November 2019 to 15 March 2020 and offers a panoramic view of the artist’s various works (ceramics, paintings and more).
The exhibition is accompanied by a catalogue published by Prisme Éditions (Collection Keramis), which is richly illustrated and contains articles written by specialists.
